General Questions
What is Xtreme?
Xtreme is an environment for 6th-8th grade students. Xtreme is comprised of two elements, large group and small group. In large group, all students are combined together for crazy cool games, live worship, and a relevant message geared towards issues middle schoolers face. After that, students then break up into small groups to discuss the message.
What camps/events does Xtreme have?
- 6th grade - Boot Camp & Walking Wisely
- 7th grade - Vertical Reality & Walking Wisely
- 8th grade - Vertical Reality & Walking Wisely
What is a Small Group?
Small groups are the heartbeat of Xtreme and one of the most important things we do as a church across all environments. In Xtreme, a small group is a group of middle school students that have been put together by grade, location and gender. They meet together each Sunday at Xtreme in order to connect with other students and their leaders in order to grow deeper in their relationship with God. Typically groups will discuss the message they heard that day in Xtreme and how it relates to their lives. Small groups are encouraged to regularly get together for social events and outings outside of Sunday morning to help build relationships and have fun! Small groups will stay together throughout middle school, multiplying as needed as the groups grow in size.
When do they get out of small group?
Students usually get out of small group around the same time as main service; however, Xtreme does not have an end time. Each group wraps up their discussion at their own pace. So parents please be patient as your students small group ends their discussion.
Parent Questions
Can a parent be a small group leader of their student?
We encourage parents to be small group leaders, but not in their own student's group. In these difficult middle school years, we want someone in addition to their parents speaking into their lives.
How can I as a parent get involved with Xtreme?
We have several opportunities: Small group leader, Host Team, Kitchen Team, and On-Deck Leader. Also, we always need volunteers on the days of our events.
Can my student bring a friend to Xtreme?
Absolutely-positively-YES! We want to provide an environment that is so incredible that your student wants to tell others about it. When the friend comes, we will have them go to On-Deck, which is a small group set-up specifically for first time visitors. This is where they will explain the model of Xtreme and what we do.
What is On-Deck?
On-Deck is a small group environment geared towards first-time students. When your student comes to Xtreme, they will go to large group with all other students. When they dismiss to small groups, your student will go to On-Deck for a two-week period where they discuss what Xtreme is, how small groups are comprised, what the events are, etc. After that two-week period, your student will then be placed in a small group according to their grade, gender, and school district.
Small Group Leader Questions
How long does a small group leader serve?
We like our leaders to serve for three years, beginning in 6th grade and serving through 8th grade.
How do you define a great small group leader?
We did research of over 100 small group leaders who had served several years or more and asked each one of them “what” makes a great small group leader. We boiled all their thoughts/suggestions down into what we call The 5 essentials of a small group leader. A great leader is one who is serving their students and doing each one of these essentials.
Can a high schooler be a small group leader?
Yes! We love to have high school students who want to pour back into middle school students. The only conditions are that you have to at least be in 10th grade, and that you will co-lead alongside an adult. Ideally, we would assign a 10th grade student a 6th grade group. This way they can stay with their specific group through high school when their Xtreme group graduates to 8th grade.
What is required to be a small group leader?
First, go to our link on our site and fill out our application. The basic requirements are that you must be a member of North Point church or one of its affiliates. Second, you must be in a growing relationship with Jesus Christ, which can be shown by being in a small group. The church will do a background check on all leaders and you will have an interview by a staff member.
What type of training do you give small group leaders?
Nothing! We just throw you into a group of sugar-loaded middle schoolers and wish you well! Just kidding. Before you ever lead, the staff will do the following procedures to help set you up for success:
- A staff member will walk you through what is required to be a small group leader, referring to the 5 essentials of a great small group leader document.
- We will have you observe a minimum of 3 times in different small groups so that you can see how other leaders lead.
- We provide you a “Leader Guide” each week which has a summary of the message, the main scripture verse, and several questions to lead your group into discussion.
- Beyond that, we have at least 3-4 trainings per year, usually after Xtreme, where we go over some leadership techniques.
- We also have both coaches and a staff person who is available to meet with you one on one to go over any questions/concerns you may have.
What is a leader’s time commitment outside of Sunday?
Typically small groups should have 3-4 outings per calendar year outside of Sunday morning and church events/camps. An outing can be anything from a sleepover at your house, to a pool party, to meeting at Stars & Strikes for bowling and games. We also encourage you as leader to try to connect with your students at least once a week, either by e-mail, phone, text, whatever medium works best for you and your students.
Are small group leaders required to go to all camps?
Absolutely! We feel that the time you spend with your students at our camps or events is worth 5-6 Sundays of regular meetings with your student. Again, as a leader you will only have 2 main events/camps per year. For more on our events, or when they occur, please go to our events page.
Why do I need a Co-leader?
We try to give every small group two leaders for several reasons:
- This is helpful for when you might have schedule conflicts, the other leader can help cover the group.
- We encourage both leaders to take turns leading the group. We have found that every leader has a different personality and style of leading, which is helpful for students.
- Another great reason, for outings, events, you will want a co-leader to help.
- Finally we hope that your group continues to grow. If it gets to a point where we need to multiply the group into 2 groups, then each group will already have a leader that they know and have bonded with.
What if a student asks me a question that I don’t know?
Great, that shows we are human and don’t have all the answers to life. There are several things you can do. First, make sure to always tell your student "Great question." Second, we have several resources for you:
- Talk to your Groups Director or the Director of Xtreme
- We have developed a resource page on our website that has several books/talks that can help.
- Most importantly, let the student know that you will get back with them. This gives you a great opportunity to follow back up with the student and have a one-on-one conversation.
After 8th grade, do I move up to high school with my students?
That is purely your choice. We have several leaders that do move up with their students, and several leaders who decide they would rather serve again in Xtreme and start over with a new 6th grade group. IF you move up to high school, you will most likely NOT have your same group of students. They will place several of your students with you, but they also try to break groups down by school districts which change with high school.

What is a 30-B4 meeting?
This is a meeting that occurs 30 minutes before your Xtreme hour. This is an opportunity for the staff to go over with the leaders any pertinent information.
What if my group gets too big?
Pat yourself on the back because you are doing a Great Job! If your group gets to large, we will multiply your group and you and your co-leader will each take 1/2 of the group. We will then assign you each a new co-leader. A normal size group would have approximately 18-22 on roster, which should see about 10-14 on a weekly basis. If your group is consistently seeing 18 or more students, then we will look at multiplying your group.
